If you want complete centralization then why not force the game to be exclusively the same set 6 for every game? That will mean that only skill, and a bit of luck, distinguishes people in each game. If you can understand how it is good to have more than literally the exact same 6 every time then you can understand the benefits of expanding to include more and more pokemon.

Consider the case of DotA, where the game is less centralized than LoL and the drafting/banning phase is just as important to competition is in game skill.

I can understand your argument about centralization, and it certainly works well for most regular sports, but for the survival of a game what is necessary is people to enjoy playing it. I would argue that it is probably better for the survival of the competitive side of pokemon that people feel like they can use a wider array of pokemon in their teams. My evidence is the number of people who complain about wanting it, regardless of whether or not you agree with them their interest in the game is what helps keeps it alive.
