Gary got cucked in the anime
Clearly a better trainer than Ash in Season 1, loses earlier than him for no reason. They built him up to be more focused, ditching the cheerleaders, in Johto and outpaced Ash the entire region but yet he finds a way to lose the 1v1 matchup at the League. Then he basically insta retired from battling because he realised that he's really bad.

Gary has a steady job doing research like his grandpa. Ash is still ultimately a loser since he continues to compete in tournaments, get beaten, and ultimately live life like a street urchin. Gary won at life by discarding childish dreams so he could grow up into a responsible adult. Ash continues to be a manchild and pursues his childish dreams with unrealistic expectations.
