A bad design with a cool concept behind it is not unheard of. I'd argue that Pokemon like Abra, Snorlax and Porygon aren't exactly the best designs, but when you consider the lore behind them, they become a lot more interesting.

A lot of the Pokedex entries refer directly to "the people of Alola", which hasn't really been something we've seen before, outside of some small instances and a couple of Kalosmon.
Closest I can think of to this was the connection between the legendaries in Sinnoh to the people of Sinnoh, but this is even with your average Pokemon.

Pallosand Is pretty damn cool, although it kinda reminds me of banette in how it forms
