I guess you could interpret speed more as reaction time than physical movement speed. Also in the context of a battle, acceleration is more important than top speed

Ariados having Speed as its lowest stat (base 40) always perplexed me. I mean, it's a spider, you'd usually associate speed more-so than HP and Def, which are both base 70.
