Wew. I'm still in disbelief. The writers had an excellent buildup in the palm of their hands, but they dropped it harder than Fat Man on Nagasaki. They hyped up Ash winning the next league since the last episode of BW. The special synchro form, the battle against the champion, the progress, everything. Also, the fact that he kept losing against Alain was the perfect opportunity to make him win this time, but they completely shat on storytelling 101. This felt like someone swapped the "Ash wins the Kalos League" episode and aired "Winning isn't Everything, Kids #6" for shits and giggles. All the more so because there are two animations of Greninja hurling the orange shuriken; one with ink splotches and the other with the swirling vapor. It all feels very off.

I really hope the battle was rigged. Does anyone know if that Malva and TR interaction about "Greninja's defeat" is legit?

Up until now, he's been a godsend. He took the train wreck of BW and turned it into a really enjoyable ride. With all the hype and tension leading up to the final round, it's clear he's a capable enough director to tell the story he wants to tell. The only reason for Ash losing has to be the status quo. I mean, he wasn't he a fan of Pokemon before he became director? I'm sure he wanted Ash to win too.

But what if he's a mad fucking genius?

Right now the only thing that could possibily redeem XY for me is if the Heroes of Kalos ceremony takes place and Ash plays a BIG role in Team Flare.

Not Alan coming in as support or fighting Lysander, not Blaziken Mask fighting Lysander.

I wouldn't have minded Ash losing so much if it was at least a cool loss? But no insert song, no real battle damage, his friends seemed barely into despite Serena in particular wetting herself throughout the entire league. Ash didn't even get a real monologue or anything. Not even a hat turn so you know he's serious.

Not to mention that the entire 2nd half of the battle just turned into like dread music that wasn't exciting at all, it's like they didn't want this episode to be enjoyable at all.

If Greninja had put as amazing of a display as he have until now and Charizard came out of the fight completely exhausted it would have been a lot easier to swallow. So i have seen some theories on how the anime could possibly justify Ash losing, i have another one to throw into the mix.

Team Flare is collecting Mega energy to power the Corrupted Zygarde or something right? and Synchro is noted to be stronger then Mega evolution and is similar energy wise, what if when Ash was using Ash Greninja, Team Flare was slowly sapping his Synchro energy making him weaker each fight thus meaning Ash Greninja was sapped to shit when it was time for Ash vs Alain, which also explains why Lysandre is torturing Ash in the preview, he is sapping the last bits of Synchro energy in Ash to power himself further.

Of course if this theory is true then that means Ash and Greninja have been handicapped this whole time and Ash might lose the ability to use synchro after Lysandre has sapped all of his synchro energy, that or Ash defeats Lysandre absorbs the Synchro Energy and maybe Mega energy and proceeds to help Zygarde defeat his Corrupt sibling.

I never believed it would go anywhere past the XY anime due to the cyclical nature of Pokemon but it's still not the same situation as any previous AshxMain girls ship.

I thought about it for a long time (ever since i saw it in a livestream) and have come to realize that in the end i was never hype for the league until everyone else managed to infect me with it, i loved the journey and cared little for the destination, although i do think Ash losing as fucking bullshit and i still want him to win but even so i still enjoy XY and i have many fond memories of the last 3 years so i won't allow this to sully it.

Of course i feel as if if Serena doesn't come to Alola i will probably not bother unless Generation 7 has a great plot animation and characters.

What i am hoping for most would be for Ash Serena Clemont and Bonnie to all go to Alola or Ash Serena Bonnie and Mallow filling the role of cook since Clemont would be stuck in Lumiose as Gym Leader and Bonnie is in Alola with Squishy due to the plot of Sun/Moon but chances are it won't happen.
