You just need to show him there's always some good things behind those seemingly cutesey designs. The way I got over my hatred was learning how many things went behind the designs of each pokemon, seeing fanart of people who really liked them and eventually I just couldn't bring myself to hate them anymore.

I think just playing a game without using edgy pokemon would be enough for your friend to begin to like them. I don't know, figure out a way to challenge him into doing it

I can really only explain this in terms of extremes.

If your favorite Pokemon is one commonly associated with furshit (Lucario, Gardevoir, Lopunny, etc etc..), it is extremely hard to find "good company" in the community. Sure, you could just primarily associate yourself with people similar to you, but that doesn't work sometimes. Some people have "dignity", and don't want to be mistakenly labeled as a furfag. So they'll either get a "new favorite pokemon" or simply never mention what their favorite is.

Same thing applies to say, a Pokemon that is overtly extremely popular. If someone says their favorite pokemon is Greninja, people would be quick to assume that person is either an anime-obsessive faggot, or a smogon faggot. There's a good chance that neither of those are correct, but people will still assume the worst of that person simply based off their favorites.

So, some people selectively choose what to and what not to like, based off the ridicule (or lack there of) that they would get for openly stating their love for a certain "thing".

If somebody told me they like lopunny, I'd think "Oh yeah, she's a lot of fun to play", not "man this person is a degenerate", specially not if they told me immediately after. While there's certainly a decent amount of accepting people in any community, there's always a pinch of cynicism every so often. And it's only basic human nature for negativity to stand out amongst indifference, or even positivity. Oh course I'm only speaking hypothetically here, because that's not how it worked for me. I'm referring to my past experiences to explain this phenomenon.

Nearly every time I have said "My favorite Pokemon include Luxray, Lucario, Zoroark, and Gallade", I've been called edgy, a furfag, or both. I'm one of those people that will make their opinions and preferences flexible, as a result of negative reinforcement speaking a lot louder than positive reinforcement.

No Pokemon has been ruined for me here. In fact, I've come to like a lot of Pokemon I didn't really care for before thanks to /vp/. The furry stuff gets weird, but I think it's just more shocking to me at times because it gets posted on a blue board. I don't really mind or care what people like. On the internet, I can easily avoid that stuff if I want to.
