It is pretty well worth it, it's only $5 per year or whatever. Compare to the old equivalent pokemon box games on the home consoles and it's not a bad deal and has a much better UI. The only thing that really annoys me is since it's tied to your nintendo account, it's console locked. So if you want to switch to a new 3DS you have to buy a new subscription, take pokemon from the bank onto your cart and then bring them from the cart to your new DS's bank.

I think paying $5 every time a new game comes out is worth it over the fucking annoying pal park from 3 to 4 and the annoying dreamcatcher minigame from 4 to 5 as well if you're just in it for the transfering. You don't need to subscribe during a gen, they say they eventually delete your bank if you're not subscribed but I didn't have one from X/Y until just a few days ago and all of the junk I left in it was still there. Just take everything important out when you're letting your subscription lapse to be safe.

Plus they do some exclusive distributions over it which are a nice perk.

You can't use bank without paying, so if you let the subscription lapse they will be stuck in there. They also reserve the right to delete unused accounts but I haven't heard of them doing it yet. I transfered a bunch of Pokemons from B/W into ORAS. In fact I have a full dex and my Virizion is the OG one from Black, I have yet to capture him in the Mirage Spot.

Never was. I've been using my own "bank" since the middle of Gen 4. Pokemon Bank doesn't need to be server-side you can set up a free alternative on your SD card with a hacked 3ds.

it's worth it if you have more pokemon than you know what to do with, and it's worth the $5 per year
but i'm not one of those people, i only have 4 boxes filled ingame and i'm stuck with having to pay for a service i'm never going to use just so i can transfer pokemon from a previous game once.

It's very useful if you want to have enough room for a Living Dex or want to shiny hunt.
Plus, the occasional giveaway, and the fact that it gives you more BP for every pokemon you have stored.
