It's because that button only works once per battle. A mega gets a powerup for the entire fight.

So you can use it to KO a big enemy once, then you're down your boost for the rest of the match. Not NEARLY as broken as Megas, probably not broken at all.

Really all megas need is proper balancing. Best way would've been to give every mega an individual ability so it can be buffed/nerfed.
On the other hand Megas can always be fixed at any time because you can just give them a different mega stones as multiple mega stones for one Pokemon is a thing.
