I’m going to be honest here. The prospect of Ash winning the league was pretty much the only good storytelling element this league had going for it.
Now let me explain. Alain is a character who had no interest in participating in the first place, versus Ash who’s been working towards the goal for 19 years. They introduce a character who, in less than a week, curbstomps the entire region with a Charizard who only obtained half its power by joining Team Flare in the first place. The guy is also mentally immature, isolating and pushing himself away from everyone, never respects his opponent if they aren’t named Ash Ketchum, and invested minimal effort into this entire thing. The message the writers would be sending out by having a guy like that become champion is basically “lol being a d-ck to everyone and taking all shortcuts to power that you can find is what it takes; effort gets you nowhere.”

Holy crap. I would’ve preferred it if Shota became champion. At least then we’d just have another repeat ‘trololol’ moment instead of the insulting win they gave gary-stu Alain here. And I was iffy on Shota already.

Once again, the Pokemon staff prove that everyone except the animation department all took smoke breaks when this league was written. I really feel like they sacrificed the league for the Team Flare arc here.
