Because of the league's shit security, his Pokemon were tired because Team Rocket kidnapped him and he had to fend them off, and then he wasn't allowed to switch out the members of his party before his match with Ritchie. For some reason sleep is considered the same thing as fainting, even though it's not, and Squirtle was taken out early in the match. And there's also no rule about a disobedient Pokemon being counted out.

Sleep is a status effect. It's always been treated like that any other time. In Ash's match against Flannery, Corphish was made to sleep and it got to come back eventually later on. In Ash's match against Tobias, several of his Pokemon were made to sleep but weren't knocked out until after Darkrai did enough damage and Sceptile was able to wake up and defeat Darkrai. Even before the match, in the very first episode there was an official Pokemon League match where a Nidorino is put to sleep by hypnosis, and the announcer specifically says that it wasn't the end for it, its trainer just called it back.

It was first time as a kid taking on the elite 4 in Pokemon Gold. I brought my Eleckid by accident. My team carried until we got to Lance. He used Hyper Beam with his Gyrados on one of my other Pokes and was recharging. I threw out my Eleckid which had Zap Cannon. He used Hyper Beam again and missed. Then my Elec Kid hit a critical hit Zap Cannon to kill the Gyrados. Was very hype.

The only way I'd feel better after all this is if he has a re-match with Alain, Ash-Greninja fucks up Zygarde, Ash's Charizard fucks up Mega-Charizard and he runs off to fuck Serena in Alola.

If we look at this thematically, it comes to mean that you WILL fail because everyone fails and you WILL lose, maybe even constantly, but dont be a bitch about it. He got his validation with the 8th medal. He never hoped to achieve it, never fought for it, his Greninja fell from the sky. He slacked so much that the green haired child surpassed him and even won. He was able to win back at the league just because of this Greninja asspull.

They didn't know how to make him strong as the trainers with Mega Evolutions without spending half of the season to watch him achieve that. So they gave him a magic Greninja that was able to do it all by himself.

Some selective history this is. Anyway, people are just going to ignore that this is his best finish since Hoenn.

People got disillusioned, but I knew for a fact that he'll lose based on the fact that this episode did not raise any indication that this would be a major episode of a long-running series. Does anyone seriously believe that Mezase Pokémon Master wouldn't play on his league clinching match? Did anyone honestly think that Oak and Delia would not be there when it happens ?
