Alain didn't feel like he was battling with much strategy vs Ash, it was just DURAGON KURAW DURAGON KURAW DURAGON KURAW DURAGON KURAW and the like until he won. Alan did fine throughout the whole battle. Only reason why it looked like he wasn't trying was because Pikachu KO'd his two psuedos. Other than that, his pokemon were better than Ash's aside from Weavile against Hawlucha.

He also made use of strats to beat Hawlucha with with Bisharp, and Alan making that huge gamble with Gullotine against G00dra was smart. Like Ash, Alan takes some big risks in battles and mostly disregards type advantages. In a sense, he's an older and better version of Ash hence the mirror scene in the second version of Getta Ban Ban. In a way, Ash lost to his future self.

Not making excuses as to why Ash lost. I'm just glad that Deviantart-Grenigger will never return after this and was BTFO by a real man's pokemon

Basically, the writers still praise Shudo's mind set that the MC "shouldn't win what matter". It's like those barbarian leaders while alive they're able to fend off the "civilized invaders", but as soon as they died, their tribe was conquered, thus rendering all his victories meaningless.
