The problem with the word "Pokémon" is that it's a typical Japanese portmanteau.

The Japanese don't just have a different syntax in their language than English, they also have different pronounciation and viable phonemes.

For instance, their language basically follows a consontant-verb pairing for each syllable. "Chi" "Da" "No", etc. These syllables tend to have their own simple meanings, and more complex words are formed by combining syllables. "No-Da-Chi", "A-Ri-Ga-To", etc. This consonant-vowel pairing is so ingrained and habituated that it even comes out when trying to pronounce English words/names. "Pasta" = "Pa-Su-Ta", "Doctor" = "Da-Ku-Ta".

Also, we're all familiar with how much trouble the Japanese have with phonemes like the lateral "L" sound. This is because the Japanese literally don't have that sound in their language. No syllable, word, or even onomatopoeia has that "L" sound, so they have much difficulty shaping their tongues in the proper way to make the sound. The best approximation is a soft "rrr" sounds, so you get pronunciations of English words like "herro".

The "Pokémon" trouble comes in when the Japanese have their fair share of Westaboos, and they love to break into random English words (especially when they drink). It's like a fun novelty to them, particularly because English is such a different, yet globally-popular language. They like to use English words in their brand names because it sounds exotic and either more "fun" or "business-like" to them. It also causes complications due to many modern inventions patented with English names.

For instance, "Smart Phone" (2 English syllables) is pronounced in Japan as "Su-Ma-To Fo-No" (5 Japanese Syllables). Everyone in Japan has a smartphone now, and a 5-syllable word is cumbersome to casually say, so they made a portmanteau of the two words: "Su-Ma-Fo".

This makes a lot of sense for Japanese people. It cuts two whole syllables off the words to bring it down to 3 from 5. It's also just a cute nickname for something they use every day that's easy to say. But this where things get lost in translation:

It basically makes no sense to English speakers whatsoever. "Sumafo" translates to "Smar Pho", which not only sounds nothing like the two original words, it doesn't even shave off any syllables. It's still two syllables, and it just sounds ugly with proper English pronunciation.

This same problem lies at the heart of the word "Pokémon". It's a portmanteau of "Po-Ke-To Mo-no-su-ta" (Pocket Monster). It cuts off an impressive 3 syllables, technically 4 when you consider that modern Japanese has evolved similar to English and other languages, in that pronunciation has become much more casual. Usually word-final vowels are silent in everyday Japanese now. "De-Su" is pronounced "Des-" etc.

Now in English, "Pocket Monster" is 4 syllables, and "Pokémon" is 3 syllables, so the portmanteau makes sense in terms of shortening. The problem with pronunciation though, is the same as the "Smar Pho". Eliminating a word-final consonant isn't something we do in English, because we have no problem pronouncing consonants on their own. Hell, we even mash up to three consonants together and have no problem with that. "Strength" not only has three consonants at the beginning, but it ends with two other strange consonant phonemes mashed together as well ("th" and "ng" are also sounds that many non-English speakers aren't familiar with. "Strength" is a very tricky for non-Anglos).

So when we see "Pokémon", it isn't a matter of simply understanding the pronunciation based on spelling of the written word. While shortening "pocket" to "pocke-" makes sense for Japanese speakers, it sounds too awkward to us, so we try to pronounce it in a way that English words commonly are prnounced. Typically, "Poe-Kay", "Poe-Kee", or "Poe-Kə" (that upside-down 'e' is called a "schwa" and it represent a neutral vowel, like the 'e' in, well, "vowel").
