I appreciate that Greninja has become so popular because it's one of the few times that a Pokemon that I absolutely love has resonated with lots of people. Add to that the fact that he got into Smash, and that unlike other favorite Pokemon I have, finding merch of him is super easy. I love that he became one of the most popular Pokemon of all time.

Not him, but I feel the same. I would say that a vast majority of Pokemon fans dislike or are indifferent to ash as a character. My only issue with ash greninja is that it looks lame. I was excited to see what they could do with mega greninja, and then we got this. Who would have even thought " let's take this popular Pokemon and give it awkward sideburns and a t-shirt pattern, everyone will love it." Now the best that we can hope for is just that if we ever get to use some kind of version of it in game that it turns out ash's is in some kind of intermediate form and the official transformation looks less like greninja doing cosplay. But what will probably happen will be ash greninja will make some shitty cameo in SM and not be obtainable, and the only super-charged greninja will forever be exclusive to the shitty anime protagonist that everyone wished had retired a decade ago.

Thing is, synchro Greninja is fairly standard shonen anime stuff, which seems to be what the anime is heading into. Its not an earthshattering concept but its not a terrible one either.

Personally, I love Ash-Greninja. The design changes aren't that major! Plus, whenever he appears in the anime, some epic music and fighting ensues. If you actually watch the anime, and I mean WATCH it (Like, headphones on, complete focus on the show), you'll find it to be a very enjoyable experience. The story revolving Ash-Greninja is shrouded in mystery, leaving some big potential for other trainers to have them. Anyways, that's just my opinion.

Greninja gains its trainer's features. It's not literally hair, just the shape of the fins changing.

In biology a protean animal can similarly alter its flesh. I have no idea why they decided to give it to a frog, but it's consistent with the term. Besides minor trainer-based adjustments, it just gains the giant shuriken, which is basically an objective improvement. You don't need to heavily alter its design.

There is no inherent value in giving it a mega form vs giving it some other powered up form.
