you guys forget that Marill was pushed on us very early on as the pikachu of Johto. Even Tracy had a Marill before Gold and Silver dropped. Ash has had many companions with pikaclones. Tracy had Marill, Dawn had Pachirisu, Iris had Emolga, and Bonnie had Denenne.
