May and Serena's stories start off rather similar. Both have no idea what they want to do, have no interest of getting into pokemon, and they both look up to Ash as an experienced older character. They both take a while to get into battling and then find their calling in Contests/performances. They even both have the fire starter where it stays in its middle stage the longest.

Only major difference is Serena's huge crush on Ash, while May IMO had a subtle crush on Ash but then it faded as she got more involved into Drew and then Harley.

May and Serena also have similar body styles.
