However, they returned to their original selves in XY and I think that's one of the few things that I dislike about that series. The tl;dr is that it's basically NaruHina but with Pokemon.

The long story is that Ash met Serena at a summer camp when they were younger (even younger than 10 just go with it) and he found her hurt. He inspired her and bandaged up her knee and took her back to camp. Later, she sees him jumping off of the Eiffel Tower on TV and decides to ditch her Mom to go see him (really an excuse to get out of Rhyhorn Racing practice, which she hates). She inspires him with the words that he told her when they were younger, and they keep working off each other like that. Serena's thirst is real and visible, but Ash only treats her favorably and very friendly (Like other dense Shonen MCs).

Misty was the first anime girl I ever found hot, but she got on my nerves, her leaving felt like leaving a comfort zone. But I never missed her.
