It really deserves to be better. Especially in gens 1 and 2, GF balanced pokemon around when you obtained them ingame. Beedrill could be obtained at level 10, and so they gave it a low BST of 385 (now 395).

Ariados isn't obtained until level 22 (!), and by that point there are much better pokemon available and stronger opponents to fight. But it was only given a meagre 390 BST. Compared to Beedrill, it has the same attack, better defense, worse special defense, and much worse speed. Considering how terrible spinarak was in GS and how much of a chore it was to get to 22, it's really not justified to make it so shitty.

I actually have a competitively trained Ariados on cart. I use him as a lead every once in a while, setting up Sticky Web, using a Focus Sash to ensure survival, Toxic Spikes for additional setup in case I get a good match up, Sucker Punch for priority, and Poison Jab for STAB and coverage.

he fucking sucks. I almost always use my Galvantula instead.

You're using Ariados wrong. He'll always be inferior to Galvantula if you try to shove him in the same role. He can work fairly well if you get a little more creative about it.

Toxic Spikes and a priority move were my attempts to differentiate him. Galvantula only gets Sticky Web, then it's pure offense. I tried to add a bit more utility to my Ariados, comparatively.

Actually, I've had a Cacturne that's worked pretty reliably for me competitively. The thing gets Counter, Destiny Bond, and Sucker Punch. Slap a focus sash on that motherfucker and give him seed bomb so he has an actual move and he can put a serious dent in a team that doesn't expect him.

Because Pokémon is designed as an RPG, and Bug-types are just supposed to be disposable stuff that works great earlygame but becomes dead weight quickly. Giving you a Larvesta on Route 2 would be ridiculous (assuming it evolved at the same level as other bugs)

At lv30, it looks like a fight that occurs relatively early in the game (before the midway point). I hope you're right, but realistically Ariados is not his ace and he'll probably be faced many times over giving him time to dump Ariados from his team lest it just become dead weight in his final endgame lineup

How would you feel about Gamefreak applying stronger retcons to stats? I know they buffed some pokes be 10 points here and there in Gen 6, but let's not pretend that actually saves a shitmon.

I'm talking like 100+ points of buff spread out across the relevant stats, whatever it takes to make them viable.

I still think he's fun with Protean but definitely needs a boost in attack. I primarily use him to revenge kill with protean and shadow sneak, but he's also got drain punch for recovery, knock off for coverage, and facade because everyone tries to burn him.

He has a good 130 attack stat and 115 defense but his other stats are ass. If he gets a mega to boost speed he'll be a monster and maybe it'll go with the tropical theme of Alola.

All Kingler really needs is like, a ten point buff to HP, and a few more physical moves. Give it Icicle Crash, Poison Jab, Shadow Claw and Dragon Claw and I think it'd shoot up a few tiers.
