Wurmple is the most interesting Pokemon they have ever created with the most unique evolution method.

Actually, Nincada and Wurmple are both pretty amazing.

The "spikes" are just extra silk used to stick to stuff. It'd be kind of weird to have it on the model, to be honest.

The "spikes" are just silk they use to stick to trees.

They've never had them in the anime or any 3D game, because if they have a trainer carrying them around in a Pokeball, they don't need to stick to trees.
