The more gym leaders you add the less memorable they're going to be.

That's why changing the format is a pretty great idea in theory. But they kind of replaced it with a similar concept and I do think that has potential to hurt the Trial Captains a bit.

I'm still mixed on the pokemon count. I liked that none of them had more than three, because each pokemon felt powerful and personal, but like, gym battles ended up being quite easy.

This is all there really is to it.

Wulfric is the only gym leader in the game I like because he's a huge motherfucker who you first meet in a field tending to some wild Pokemon and being a nice guy, and his pre-battle speech being tailored to your party was an excellent touch for an Ice trainer.

Everyone else but Grant and Korrina hole up inside their gym, say a few generic lines, and are never seen again outside of battle maison bullshit.

I honestly forget Clemont is even a gym leader and think he's anime only sometimes.

Gen 2, 4, and 5 were the only times Gym Leaders got REAL attention as actual characters.

Especially following on from 4, and more significantly 5, where every single Gym Leader had attention and their own little story arc. Hell, you guys remember Memory Link in B2/W2? Some of the features they added with that were literally just extra cutscenes to expand and develop the Gym Leaders more!

So then you get to X/Y, and literally the only Gym Leader who has any kind of invested character or sub-plot, is Korrina. Sad!

Those original three were still pretty memorable because;

>One of them became the Brock replacement in the anime
>Gimmick of fighting 1 of them, everybody remembers which one they battled
>They were the only ones who didn't leave their Gym, not even for the final battle at N's Castle
>Led to the semi-popular theory that they were the Shadow Triad
>They had an entire Memory Link cutscene devoted to them to explain why they were missing, and to put that theory to rest.

Literally every character in Gen 5 was given SOME kind of attention to make them memorable, except maybe one or two of the E4 members. But E4 members almost never get more time, because they're memorable just for being E4 members, I guess.
