All I remember about the cats is the struggle/game I had going to keep the damn thing alive whenever I got paired with x/y's rival character. Are they any good or is the negative opinion I developed from that justified?

The male one is like the only good one and that's because of Prankster, can be really helpfull with setting up screens and T-waving threats.
