Pikachu is a weird phenomenon no one's going to completely understand unless someone from Game Freak or the original anime staff explains why it was picked as Ash's starter. For the record though, all of the manga artists in the early period took a shine to it. I think it's because it was a genuinely eye-catching design.

I remember something about Pikachu being chosen over Clefairy as the franchise mascot because they assumed it would have a more gender neutral appeal worldwide. They made the right choice. Just sucks that Raichu was cast aside for 20 years and that Pichu happened.
