Lysandre's stated goal was the "beauty" of the world, and when he explained further he mentioned that humans were always killing each other fighting over resources. So basically his plan was to nuke the world so there would be fewer people and no fighting over scarcity.

There was also something about killing all Pokemon because they were too pure for this ugly world or something. I kind of got lost when he started literally crying.

He said that Pokemon has to die because as long as they existed people would use them as tools to do evil. He was crying because he genuinely loved his (and all) Pokemon but felt they had to be destroyed.

Lysandre was actually a great character. He just gets swept up in the over generalized Gen 6 was shit in every respect groupthink. It annoys the piss out of me that people honestly have no clue what he wanted even though while it's vague through most of the game is explained at the fucking climax when you'd be paying the most attention and then have the fall to both about how shit he was. Maybe if you attempted to give a shit instead of actively teying to hate the game people would be able to pick out XY's good points.
