This is the first Female MC that don't appear in the anime that is canon:

-It looks like Mallow will be Ash's companion instead of Female MC (ala Best Wishes, where a Gym Leader was chosen instead of Hilda)

-Popplio fits better to Hau than any other starter and he chooses the starter that is weak to your choice.

-Male MC is mostly seen with Pikachu than with Alola starters, also in pre-release pics he is almost always seen with Litten.

-Rowlet fits better to Female MC than any other starter. Also in case Male MC appears in the game as another rival he then will have the starter with advantage over your (aka Litten)

Indeed May, Dawn and Serena are the only female canon protagonists (all of them due to the anime), though ORAS happens in a different universe and the canon protagonist is somehow questionable but I would say Brendan is canon (only starter own by him is Treecko in both pre-release material and anime, while May has both Torchic and Mudkip. Obviously Torchic is often related to May)
