Alolan Pokemon are just alternatives to Megas for Pokemon that probably never will get Megas. Anyone who seriously thinks Megas are gone has taken the marketing faaaar too seriously. They'll probably appear in one of the last trailers when they introduce some particularly powerful trainer.

Good, megas were a terrible idea. Region-specific forms are a much better take on the same idea, giving us new forms of old Pokemon without completely warping the game due to be overpowered.

My belief is that it mostly is for the recent GO players, trying to get them interested in a new game while giving something to veterans.

Even if only give gen 1 pokemon alola forms, and that would be terrible, I hope they focus on pokemon who could use new forms. If pokemon like gengar or starmie get new forms I'll be pissed.
