They all set the benchmark for what Pokemon is, it's not about better its about how when you hold the new designs up to the old one, they don't look right.

At this point its a matter of "why are you putting these designs in the pokemon world when they don't share any of aesthetics of the pokemon world?"

Like it would not be a stretch to put Gatomon into the Pokemon universe at this point but it would be insane to put Meowth into the Digimon universe.

I don't mind it too much but I hate both sides of the argument because one wants to decry that the new designs are garbage (i like some of them a lot) and the other will defend the new ones to the death without acknowledging what has been changed and what has been lost.

I honestly have an enjoyed every gen of pokemon, and they've definitely changed, but I dont think all too much, and definitely not for the worst. I'm no genwunner, but when comparing any new 'mons to the original 151, it's definitely more about the general aesthetic. Gen I is THE benchmark for the series. I can totally see why people instinctively turn their nose to newer pokémon cause there has been a general shift in style. Hell, we stopped getting those Sugimori watercolors after Gen II.

I think we've gotten many awesome new pokémon over the years so the genwunners kinda upset me, but the anti-nostalgia metacontrarians are just as bad.

I disagree. We've seen some real thought put into designs in every generation. I think Pyukumuku is a good example of that for this new batch. They designed a pokémon around a sea cucumber and based its attacks and ability off of their biology in a clever way.

I'll tell you why, because the artists realized their designs were on the bland side and they wanted them to stand out. the correct approach was to add more detail, or possibly redesign them.
