Well I don't think that's what they're referencing, but I'm glad you reminded me of those, wouldn't be surprised if we do see Pokemon that look more like those statues

Volcanion is a fox and Hoopa is a ghost.
The only thing that makes your argument valid is that Robin Hoot resembles that statue more than Hoopa. But that thing on top looks nothing like a mermaid or a seal, and the statue on the left is definitely a fox, not a tiger/cat.
