Lance's role in the story was great. His team in battle... p bad.

Cynthia is a better version of Lance. She had an equally involved role in the game, but also had a sweet ass team.

How should a future jerkish rival play out like then? We had Blue be an arrogant and smug rival, whose main flaw was his own pride who in the end is humbled and learns his mistakes as in Gen 2.

And then we have Silver who is a bit more villainous than Blue and outright sees Pokemon as tools, but in the end he realizes that Pokemon are not tools and confesses to Professor Elm that he stole the starter Pokemon that he stole.

So what do you have against Lance? His team may be boring but he is much more involved with the plot than most champions.

Expect compromise. Having a skilled champion with a good story/personality on top of skill doesn't seem to be in the cards. Cynthia was the last legitimately good champion, and probably the best overall. I long for someone that surpasses her.
