Gotta agree that he isn't some edge load like people think he is, but both in his art and sprites he normally looks a lot more serious then the other playable characters.

The whole series is about your characters being friends with their Pokes, so that's most likely just his "game" face anyways, since it would be pretty hard to make friends with them if he was always serious like that.

He is, in BW2 in fact he's called a living legend. But he can still be beat like any trainer, since being a trainer means you have to have good strategy.

Ash uses normal attacks against Agatha's ghost pokemon.

In a double battle with Corphish and Treeko, upon seeing the enemy use Solar Beam he had Treeko take cover behind Corphish, who was ordered to use Harden.

There are dozens if not hundreds of these types of situations with Ash, because he is a shit trainer who doesn't know wtf he's doing at least 90% of the time.
