Zen Mode was bad because of the set up it had. Going from a fast attacker to slow defensive Pokemon at a fraction of your HP was a really stupid get up. It just has to either be fast or become fast with a form change.

I don't know why stance change was tied to both an ability and a nice. If they wanted it to have a blank ability they cos have given it a number of things. I can't think of any reason this couldn't work exactly the way it does without stance change.
