OP, I understand what you're getting at, and it's a hard thing to put in to words.

The other day I was talking to a guy who asked if I'd seen the Chinese leaks. He asked if I liked them, and when I said no he tried to make it out like I was "grasping for straws" on my reasoning. (He proceeded to tell me how "butthurt and upset" I was, despite me sitting right there in front of him. Not being upset or even angry.)

It's not worth it to try and explain to people who don't get it.

There are a limited number of slots available for new Pokemon on each release. That's why people are so strict on their own personal preferences on the new Pokemon that get released. Everyone has a different criteria that they hope is met with each new Pokemon.

Starters are a particularly big deal, because they define each players experience in a big way. It used to be that a starters' final stage was relatively "palatable" and could be envisioned on a wide array of trainers. It's not really like that, anymore.

With the likelihood of the Chinese leaks, this will likely be the first time I'll immediately release my starter and just play through without it. It's no big deal, because it's obvious to me some people like the designs. I'm sure there is a Gen that I love, that they can't stand.

My hangups with S/M haven't been confirmed or proven wrong yet, so I'll just have to wait.

That seems like an odd portion of my post to point out, but I'll explain my thought process on that statement.

Pokemon aren't like Digimon or monsters from Monster Rancher. When you get one, it's usually the sole representative of whatever it's design is. (The operative word there being "usually".)

For example, let's say a Dolphin Pokemon was being announced. You would hope that it would look cool because that will be "the" dolphin Pokemon.

On top of that, we don't have a solid number of how many new entries we will get in this game. But even still, let's say that 150 new Pokemon hypothetically got released. You want as many of those 150 designs to be decent as possible.

When Gen 5 came out, I remember being miffed that three legendaries were literal copies of one another, and the rest looked terrible. And I remember thinking GF was lazy with the Klink line, because it was more than just, "It gets bigger" or "multiple heads". It was literally a part of it getting copied and pasted.

But this Gen doesn't look like we'll have that problem.

Noticing a pattern here? Humanoids are popular among Pokemon fans particularly the older fans, so they figured out the perfect formula for starters.

I guess the point I was trying to make in my original post is that, it's very possible to make a full generation of Pokemon that everyone can look forward to for their own reasons, and that it's also integral that they develop at least one starter that everyone can "identify" with.

I'm personally just shocked that they didn't manage to do that this time. I have always liked the designs of just about every starter. However, I'm glad to see that there are tons of people that love the new designs. I'll probably use Rockruff as mine.

I do have a certain degree of doubt pertaining to their relevance to a final design. However, I can't lend the presence of the character design in both to sheer coincidence.

An interesting thought on the matter would be, that Gamefreak knows that Mallow was present in those "Leaks" before they announced her.

But you can devise any degree of speculation or conspiracy that you'd like.
