From a purely design standpoint, a lot of the new mons are pretty solid, and this is what most people find appeal in.
But their 2D presentation thus far has been total ass, which is also what most people find offense in.

A lot of better typing for Pokemon (no Poison being slapped on everything), faster and smoother gameplay across everything, and later games simply have more. The original games probably have the most replayability for simplicity's sake, there's nothing really there to slow you down from just playing the game in a new refreshing way, but honestly there's no reason to not just play FRLG unless you don't want to listen to that abortion of a soundtrack.
