The designs of all the other ones make it clear that they are possessed objects. Banette is an evil doll, Chandelure is a free-floating chandelier with a face naturally embedded in the lantern part, and Aegislash has quasi-arms and an eye on its hilt.
The new one is literally just a bendy sandcastle with two dots inside.

Haunted castle is a thing. Haunted chandelier is not. Not that it matters though. They are pokemon. Why make an electric mouse or a dragon bat? It doesn't need to make sense. Just enjoy the game as it is

There was an interview where they revealed that Jellicent was originally pure water, but then they added Ghost to add variety to the dex.
Stunfisk was also a Water type originally, and Sawk/Throh had horns to be more oni-like.

I really dislike this design, but maybe they'll be the mimics of Alola and that might be cool. On the other hand, unless there were items in sandcastles for some reason, no one would even bother interacting with a sandcastle, making them pointless.

It's not really based on any animal or object; it's a unique monster. However, the floppy design, the zipper, and the pin on its back make it look like a doll. It's unique, and at the same time gets the point across. A great design.
