Years back, I had an R4 card, but I fucking gave it away when I got my 3DS and my DS stopped working.

What's the best one I can get nowadays? I'm assuming official ones are long gone.

But I don't really need GBA game support. All of the GBA games I like are available as custom VC injections, and I prefer to emulate on my PC anyways. So the 3DS and GBA functions seem redundant.

I modded my spare 2DS for Robobot when it leaked, so I'm ready for if SM gets leaked super early, I just need to get a bigger SD card and go through the lengthy SD transfer process because I didn't bother with AL9H

SM comes out the same time everywhere but Europe who gets it late, so it won't be a two month deal like Kirby which only leaked two days before its JP release and only seemed like two months because it was arbitrarily held back for the west. nds-card's website is the best place to go, anon. GBAtemp sponsors them.
Take my advice: Buy an R4-i Gold 3ds RTS from nds-card. They're 14$ right now.
There's also some other brands on the site (the snoopy model) that are about 8$, but you need to set your 3ds' date to 2015 to use them.
