He is obsessed with contests yes, but is not gay. Ruby and Sapphire used to have opposite personalities, but when Ruby got injured fighting off Zinnia's Salamence in the past and Sapphire freaked out at him, both of them changed.

Ruby took her reaction that his fierce battling seriously scared her, so he devoted himself to contests instead to distance himself from his wrathful previous personality. Sapphire took the event instead as a sign that she was too weak to protect her friend, so she decided to grow up around wild Pokemon and grow stronger so she wouldn't be helpless again.

Both of them remembered the Salamence incident vividly, but only had vague memories of another friend there until they both realized who the other person was. Sapphire eventually confessed, Ruby reciprocated, but pretended the confession didn't happen after Aqua and Magma were defeated because he still has issues with taking off his mask. Come ORAS, Ruby is eager to shoulder all the burdens thrown at them to keep his precious Sapphire out of danger, and she gets royally pissed at him when she finds out he's doing that and threatens to forget about him completely if he continues. He stops.

The characters have a default name that are sometimes even used in the anime themselves (Dawn, May, Serena, etc), which makes them their official canon names because that what the games/anime labels them as, regardless of what you, the player, name them.
