>Johto
Suburban, mythic/spiritual, japanese flavored
>Hoenn
Sunny/hot, coastal, would smell of salt water, a bit rainy
>Sinnoh
Snowy, comfortable, would smell of pine trees, slow paced, cool nights
>Unova
Bustling, Varied (seasons/environments), Modern, American flavored
>Kalos
Beautiful, hand crafted, French flavored,Kind of bland
What would you say defines the Kanto region?
Nothing. It doesn't have a theme because there was no indication there would be anything beyond it at the time it was created. It's boring, flat plains with 2 urban centers. The only things that stand out are Lavender Town and maybe the Power Plant.
>>27618915
I've always felt the Kanto region was kind of rustic. The only big city was really Celadon and most of its towns were small. It also had quite a few caves and forests. So the whole game had an outdoor-sy and natural feel to me.
>>27618946
I would say the Gen 3 remakes tried to give it more of an identity but I cant place what feeling it gives me.
I know there's something there. I want to say nostalgic but that's not fair.
I posted.
>>27618973
But I also agree with.
>>27618946
I actually think that might be why it holds so well in people's memories. People are able to project their own feelings into it.
>>27618915
>French flavored,Kind of bland
it's because french food is bland, anon.
>>27618915
urbanization, research and urban centers and business
money was a big thing
nothing else really
>>27619024
this
but also >>27618946 this
maybe pollution, big corporations, street crime.
>>27618977
That's why I liked my description of rustic and natural. It didn't have many themes at all which made it... Down-to-earth? So to speak?
>>27619024
Urbanization? It really had one city.
>>27619024
How are you trying to say it was very urban, but also very empty?
Which region would you rather live in?
Regardless of Dex and Evil teams. You get to keep the region's music.
>>27619092
They had a bunch of big ass buildings with many windows in them, but the cities felt empty because it's an old old game.
>>27619096
Sinnoh.
>>27619096
>ho
>get to keep the regions music.
Unova then
I cant stand trumpets
>>27619096
Live in? Sinnoh, as I'd love to live in the comfy northern part by the ice gym
>>27619096
Sinnohbut vacation in Hoenn.
I like colder area's that are laid back and usually hate places to humid but Hoenn seems like it would a damn fine place to stay. But I feel like there would be a lot of annoying bugs.
>>27618915
>>27618946
>>27618977
Urban. Don't get tricked by the region being the first one made, its still the most urban after Unova.
Ceveral cities close together (Saffron is literally a city surrounded by 4 other cities)
Mostly paved roads in the towns (Using HGSS)
Most if its landmarks are buildings. Sliph Co, Power Plant, Pokemon Mansion, etc.
Another aspect of the region is genetics.
Mew is a legendary with every Pokemon's DNA. Mewtwo is a clone. Bill made a machine to put his mind in a Pokemon. Fossil reviving started here. There's a bunch of Pokemon that are mutations, like Muk and Voltorb. I don't know if all of this is purposeful, but its definitely a compellinf argument for a theme
>>27618915
Also, calling Johto Suburban instead of rural is just odd. I'd say Sinnoh deserves suburban, since its a good Urban/Rural mix
>>27619092
gen 1 games
the presence of endless big cities and buildings connected with gates, tunnels and roads was pretty much a rappresentation of the tokyo prefecture, plus some hints at pollution and energy that can fuck up the whole region and business if the power plant doesn't work
i don't know why they have made it empty tho
but silph co, costant presence of casino-pachinko and sellers was strictly money centered, same for the whole team rocket's activity
same for goldenrod city being connected to saffron
It's a largely suburban region that, at the time RBY/GSC were set, was on the brink of some sweeping urbanization (biggest evidence being the radio tower in Lavender and the bullet train to Goldenrod).
Looking back on it, GSC's view of the Kanto region was actually pretty cynical. Johto seemed so mystical and "homey" compared to what Kanto became, what with the whole defiling an entire graveyard and everything.
What would and African region be like?
An expanded Safari Zone area with a shit ton of tall grass and unpaved areas. Varying levels of modern society placed apart from each other? That would be interesting. (Though they kind of stole some Egyptian stuff for Unova)
Hell, I'd like to imagine a Brazilian or Eastern European region.
>>27618915
id say hoenn was more canadian, not really sunny and hot, like the coastal vancouver area. can rain in the summer but also hot summer days
>>27619304
It depends on what part, since the continent is rather large, and regional inspirations are not
>>27619304
alola but with more wild areas
probably tribal bullshit and some nairobi or south african capital city as late game including capetown city and the mountainous zone
this if you only count the subsaharian african which is usually intended as black africa
i'd expect a forest version of the lumiouse city, as in wild big dungeon
nile and lakes area, kilimanjaro being another set of mountains and finally boring desert that is close to a savannah with horde battles
>>27619397
and post game battle facilities in madagascar the same way sinnoh did it, with like three location / habitated areas and trainer / harsh routes
an african region would have both a ship that links to madagascar and a luxury class cruise train that works as both transport and daily event that includes trainer battles with rosters that shift every day
maybe featuring a midgame plot involving the villains and a city station as a gym
>>27619397
You may be on to something. Think an Alola where the water and land was switched
>>27619304
Considering how we're going to have Alola and that we've already had Hoenn, a Brazilian or African or any tropical region would be overplayed as a Japanese region. I'd say a largely desert based region would be interesting. Maybe one placed in Israel or Jordan or how about Egypt? That could really work well.
>>27619589
>Mainly desert/sandy region.
They'd never go for it. Hoenn was comfy hot. A mainly dry/arid region would feel uncomfortable.
>>27619208
This is a good post.
Kanto is more urban than people give it credit for, and really set the mood for Pokemon's sci-fi of tomorrow feel (as opposed to sci-fi of next century). Kanto is about the contrast between urbanity/technology and the rustic space between.
>>27619649
It would be a large oasis with several smaller ones, close to either an ocean or very large river. Also a snowy mountain or something
>>27619707
Thanks, I was getting peeved my answer was ignored desu.
To be fair, They made some odd decisions depicting Kanto in FRLG that didn't help. So much grass and dirt paths.
But that doesn't take away from the other things. Kanto and Unova are the only regions with two large urban cities next to each other. And in both cases its "business and pleasure"
Sinnoh has Veilstone and Jubilife but they were super far from each other.
>>27619208
Bravo, underrated post.
>>27619096
I hate the heat but my favorite gen is 3
I love the cold but my least favorite gen is 4
I guess Unova is the closest to a compromise then? Kalos should have a nice climate too, but, ugh, the French
>>27619649
A Mediterranean region could work really well.
Greece would be a good choice. Snowy up north, but it gets warmer further south you go. Mountainous as well. Plus all the islands would give a lot of opportunities for different environments. Just base them off the more notable ones like Rhodes, Crete, Santorini, Zakynthos, Lesbos, etctera.
Hell even Crete could have a labyrinth dungeon. With a first stage Minotaur pseudo able to be found
>>27618973
>Saffron
>>27620246
>Implying a mediterranean region wouldn't have calf fire starter that evolves into a Fire/Rock Minotaur
>>27619092
Theoretically if Gen 1 got a remake, and they bumped the size up to be up to today's standards, you would know that is wrong. Kanto might just have the largest ammount of big cities in the series, Pewter, Cerulean, Saffron, and Celadon are all up there in terms of size. The GB just couldn't show it.
>>27619096
Easy, Unova.

BRING ON THE TRUMPETS
Modern, industrialized, Tokyo-esque Japan.
Feudal, traditional, Kyoto-esque Japan.
Coastal Brazil.
Northeastern Europe, Ukraine.
America, mostly the state of New York.
France.
Hawaii.
>>27621579
>sinnoh
>ukraine or europe ever
Sinnoh technically has some port town built sing western architecture and churches because of the tradings and Russia, but the rest is all traditional, the fuck are you about?
Nature wise it's very loyal to the real life counterpart.
also
>ukraine
>not a literal bland meadow / valley region
>>27620246
Greece is next, I bet you anything. Patternfagging here, but I think every second region will be either American or European, depending if its the first gen or second on the console. Basically, I think the next regions are going to be Greece and some northern state, like Alaska. Even if I'm wrong here, Gamefreak and TPCi in general has a hard on for Greece, its a surprise they haven't done anything for it yet.
>>27619096
Sinnoh
>>27621579
>>27621686
Sinnoh was jut being an alpine region, rather than any specific place, I think.
>>27622392
>Implying Sinnoh isn't just Hokkaido and Sakhalin
>>27623507
I mean, I know the region it was based off of, but I don't feel it was as decidedly Japanese as say, Johto

I'd be okay with that, Tauros is still my bro

1.Unova, 2. Sinnoh, 3. Hoenn.
They really should just unite sinnoh, johto, and kanto together.
So I can finally have my dream game.
Be best if we start off in the mountains between the 3 and our path has us traveling to all 3 frequently. With 3 daycares
>>27619589
>>27619649
I feel like Orre was this, and although I'm nostalgic for those games, I didn't like Orre much.
>>27619096
HOENN
Unova is runner up.
>>27624644
there is a mmo-like game called pokemon revolution which has hoenn, johto, and kanto on the same world map where you can travel through em.
>>27619096
Unova
Kanto - Suburban
Johto - Traditional
Hoenn - Coastal
Sinnoh - Modern yet rural.
Unova - Urban and varied.
Kalos - Artistic
Alola - Primitive
>>27624807
That's cool and all but I really just want gamefreak to put their whole japanese maps together.
Sinnoh at the north. Kanto/Johto in the center. Hoenn in the south.
If they did a whole mainland japan with exaggerated climates, that'd be the real win win.
On a scale that they could fit into a game.
If they scaled back a little bit I bet they could get heartgold/soulsilver worth of content in all of mainland japan in the size of just maybe double that of the gen 6 remakes.
