You could easily have the series continue and be interesting with ash wining and becoming tutor/a stupider, experience over booksmarts brock to the retarded redundant character on the main team. Max barely gets any screentime to say he "ruins" the season. In most episodes he's treated as a second Brock and only has a handful of lines per episode.

The thing about DP is that it wasn't necessary.

The season was hyping up the E4 and Champion and that the winner of the league has to fight them. They bring it up a few times, gave each E4 an episode or two, had Cynthia around a lot.

They could have let him win the league, but still have him lose to Cynthia.
