I'm not a massive fan either I prefer Magnezone when i'm not running Empoleon. A water type i'd love would be Milotic but Feebass is a bitch to get in platinum. Yeah to be frank, Gen II is my favorite but HGSS's pokedex was straight fucked. I spent an afternoon hunting Feebas at 5% with an old rod for gender and nature. Spent another few hours hunting Snorunt for a female with a proper nature. It's nice to be given the option to work and grind for good/obscure pokemon before the 7th badge like most pokemon games.

Stuffing Murkrow, Misdreavous, Houndour, and Sneasel behind the E4 was dumb as fuck. HGSS didn't really fix any of GenII's problems, it just streamlined them. Getting a Dusk Stone is like pulling fucking teeth

If you're looking for non-generic starters, Magmar (if you can trade-evolve it to Magmortar sometime) is good. Vulpix and Growlithe are good too, though you might want to breed some moves onto Growlithe.
