Can the audience hear Ash and Shota talking to each other

Sometimes I think they can, but then Shota had to guess that Ash had a plan for Aegislash based off his face, not based off what Ash literally had just said.
But then we have reaction shots after Ash proclaimed victory on the first round. How did they hear him, and Shota didn't hear Ash? How did the announcer hear him and get all excited?

Nah. XY is definitely good, but it lacks a sense of tension between rivals that DP was so great at establishing with Ash and Paul's contrasting battling styles, not to say that we should retread that specific old ground, but it would've been nice if there was a rival to offer that kind of conflict for the sake of further growth for Ash. Also Ash himself isn't nearly as interesting in XY as he was in DP, partly due to lacking the calmness and general maturity that DP Ash outwardly displayed in his pseudo mentor role (something I find particularly unfortunate here since they actually did push a mentor/student dynamic between Ash and Shota and it would've been nice to see an expansion on that). I was happy to see Ash get upset in XY&Z 27-28 and take some time to show that he isn't a flawlessly confident individual, but compared to DP, there were far less of those moments than I would've liked (I'd argue partly due to lacking a rival to properly challenge Ash's views), so it felt like Ash didn't really progress all that much aside from at the beginning and towards the very end.

I don't think the group dynamic works that great either, but Johto wasted both of its companions, AG had its issues with fucking Max, and DP had issues with Brock, so that's not really something to complain about regarding XY specifically.
