Unpopular Opinions Thread

I pretty firmly think quantity over quality when it comes to new pokemon. I don't care if some are filler or mediocre, I just like have a lot of new mons to discover every new gen. Of course, this doesn't mean I'd want a gigantic dex just full of shitmons, and having both quality quantity is the ideal.

I'd be okay with a dex of only 100 pokemon if it meant they had tons of variations and were all viable in battle.

Superior looks cool but Emboar looks awful and Samurott is only average. Gen 5 starters are awful.

Gen I is easily the generation with less Pokémon of my liking. Playing Go made me realize how few mons I like from this generation (even though it was my first one and the nostalgia factor).

Also, I actually have a hard time replaying games from second generation for the lack of good choices. In the first half of the game, almost everything you can catch is a shitmon. Even many good designs (like Xatu, Forretress, Jumpluff and Furret from that gen) aren't enough to make up for how unbalanced their stat and moves distribution are.

Hoenn was the worst region in terms of design, and R/S specifically were the worst games in the series.

I prefer bipedal Pokemon that lean toward the humanoid side to quadrupedal pokemon. They're just more interesting to me. I believe being humanoid and bipedal allows Pokemon to be more creative. And I'm actually really glad and relieved that Litten becomes bipedal. I don't want another boring quadrupedal cat.

I'm baffled people want quadrupedal Litten. IMO these people are the true furfags, the antisocial ones who are afraid of other humans. They don't go out and hang with others. That's why humanoid bipedal Pokemon bother them, because they remind them that other humans exist. Their dislike of them is rooted in a deep fear and hatred of other human beings.

I'm just glad Game Freak feels the same way.

That's one of the underrated features from Emerald. It was really handy if you had a Pokemon that was underleveled. You could just pair it up with your higher level Pokemon and it would get carried through the battles.

The only region that's noticably larger is Sinnoh (and maybe Hoenn) and the only one noticably smaller is Kanto and the Sevii Islands (obviously). Every other region for me feels more or less the same in size. Kalos just looks big because the map spreads everything out, but the routes are as short as Johto's, for example

I enjoy Lucario. Ancient mythology has always appealed to me. Lucario, being based off of Anubis, was no exception. And let's not forget it's cute predecessor, Riolu. /vp/ probably hates him because Game Freak likes to shill him.

Gen 4 and 5 have the best Pokemon, I love Chandelure, Galvantula, Golurk, Mamoswine, Yanmega, Magnezone, Luxray, Sawsbuck, Gen 4 final evos are all great. I love that Gen 4 pushed the deeper lore of Pokemon!

Gen 4 and Gen 5 are my favorite gens.

Gen VI had some really solid Pokemon, probably one of the most solid batches of Pokemon so far but everything else about that gen is absolute garbage. XY felt like betas and even shipped with game breaking bugs that had to be patched out. Outside of the Pokemon it had the least memorable everything and I have to strain to remember anything about it. ORAS was no better, and actually made me realise that Gen III kind of sucks, and this is coming from someone who literally wouldn't shut up about how Emerald was the perfect Pokemon game for years and years. The only upside to ORAS was the Delta episode and some of the more cinematic bits, but that was about 10 minutes of fun following hours of boredom. They were wise to just drop Gen VI and move on so we don't have to fuck around in the monotonous and uninspired hellhole that is Kalos any longer.

I was actually really not feeling SM until some of the newer reveals, and I'm still a bit wary given how garbage Gen VI was.

Even though I'm sick of Gen I pandering, I've grown a renewed appreciation of Gen I as of late. All the Pokemon feel very... humble? I'm not sure how to describe it but even the more surreal ones are down to earth and everything feels very deliberate. I still consider Gen V to be one of (if not the) best, but it also just sort of copies a lot of Gen I and II's beats and that's unfortunate. I want to get the feeling of mystery I had with Gen I and II as a kid, seeing something like natu for the first time and having no idea what it was or what it did. I wish they'd mix it up even more and take some risks, but at the end of the day I'm just happy with more monsters really.

The best shinies to me are just alright palette swaps. With a few exceptions, of course.

I think the battle facilities aren't fun. There is no fun in finding a Quick Claw Sheer Cold anything and getting 3-0'd simply because the rng decided to fuck you. Building streaks isn't fun to me, either.

Because you have to go out of your way and try to hate on the originals. Gen I is the most solid and set the standard for which all others would follow. The designs are universally cherished.

One thing I meant to add, I'm really hoping we've seen the lat of Megas. Maybe I'd like them more if I got back into competitive but they just seem like a waste. Most of them are completely unnecessary and then others really should have just been slightly powered down normal evos. I'd be fine if they just introduced 3 or 4 new ones per gen but I'm really not a big fan of how they seem to count megas as "new" Pokemon even though they don't have a separate dex entry. The only real upside I can think of is that some of the designs are godawful so at least they're technically temporary.

Megas are a good idea on paper, but ultimately given to too many pokemon that didn't need them at all, given an overpowered ability, or both. Legendaries should never have had megas to begin with

I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion, but whatever.

I hate the plots of the games in Gen III and beyond with the legendaries woven into the narrative. The constant rehashed story of stopping the world ending pokémon just feels so cliché and uninspiries. Plus, Gen IV saw the Arceus event, which featured a literal God of pokémon. Everything since then kinda pales in comparison.

I just think that Pokémon works best when it's focused on the world and how humanity interacts with pokémon on a more (albeit, a bit more mundane) personal level. I also think the legendaries seem way more interesting when they're off doing their own thing with the player stumbling upon them.
