The website and trailer already confirm that completing the trial and beating the Kahunas is how you progress in the game.

Yes, but we have been given the information that there are more than four island trials, which have a type specialist battle at the end, after which you will fight the Kahuna of each of the four islands. It seems to me that it's quite possible the trials will take the place of gyms, though there may be more than 8 of them, which would be a welcome thing and give us the potential to have a specialist of every type in one game. It could also mean that the Kahuna's are taking the place of the Elite Four in a more spread out fashion, and the "Champion" or whatever the equivalent is in Alola will be battled after that.

Fact is, we don't know. The trials seem like a different spin on gyms with you having to complete some sort of challenge other than just curbstomping trash mob trainers to reach the boss, so it's not entirely illogical to say that they'll replace gyms. On the other hand, it's also possible that these are supplementary to the gyms and we'll still have a full circuit, and the trials will bring the number of type specialists up so that there's one for each type. I think that'd be pretty awesome, especially if they include some way to rematch all of them at a higher/end-game level. One can dream.
