I used to collect Pokemon cards when I was younger (Gen 1) and I have still have quite a bunch of them. We never really played the actual card game, we just liked the cool pictures and shit. I have no idea how this game works.

I just bought this since I thought it looked rad with Ampharos being my favourite Pokemon. Can I build a deck around him? I was thinking an Electric type deck since it's my favourite type.

I'm just looking at theme decks now, would they be a good base?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Theme decks are awful and terrible for even teaching the game because they require significant investment and teach bad habits like unfinished Pokemon lines, way too many energies, not nearly enough trainers, no focus, and more.

Ampharos can be okay as a meme deck. Rough Seas and Exavolt can create a permanent lock to guarantee you knock something out. And if you're still alive you can lock the next thing that comes in too. You don't want really many other Pokemon because Ampharos-EX can set up all your M-Ampharoses.

Most EXes actually aren't that viable, Ampharos included.

You don't need pre-evos to use EXes. You skip straight to Ampharos. In exchange, the opponent wins twice as fast as if you were playing non-EXes. But in return, EXes are the only ones who can mega evolve.

There's a drop down menu to select formats. Select Theme. You basically play at an advantage as Basic Green if they play anything else.

I consider it a pretty dumb design to make mega cards end your turn unless you run a specific trainer card on a specific pokemon.

What's the difference really? You typically play one mega line for consistency anyway. Sure you may open up a few options, but it's not that big of a deal. Most of the time the deck is built around that one mega line.

How do you calculate weakness and resistance in dual type pokemon if the opponent is weak and resistant to each of the types

Weakness is calculated first, then resistance.

Also if you attack a Pokemon with 2 2x Weaknesses with a dual type that has both of those types, they stack, and it's 4x.

What does a Garbodor deck look like? I can't imagine it being that devastating. We've still got cards like Hex Maniac and Lysandre. I mean unless we're getting item locked, it's not like we need our abilities every turn. We just need to set up and have that one turn where we snipe the Garbodors no? I don't know. I figured I might need the burst and that 130 HP sounded a lot better than 90. It's nothing I absolutely need but thought it was a just-in-case measure. Was also skeptical about including it. Not sure if I should cut or play one-of. What should I put instead?

Another Level Ball? +1/+1 Trubbish Garb? Max Elixirs? I'm thinking Max Elixir might be necessary for an instant attack now that I think about it.

Any EX that is useful in the game is worth more than any Generations card.

The only card useful for the game in the whole Generations set is Jolteon. You are better off buying Roarking Skies or Primal Clash instead of Generations.

A friend is running a Turbo Dragon Dance Haxorus with Garbodor.

Since it's a deck heavily focused on evolving, in his second turn he's always going to have both Garbodor and a Haxorus dancing in your face.

Haxorus can one-shot almost everything after a Dance, and it only needs two energies.

It's crazy how much is slows me down, especially in search heavy decks.

Ideas for Talonflame?

So far in 3 games I've had running Talonflame/Volcanion/Entei I've started going 1st all 3 games and have hit Talonflame each time. Going first doesn't really give you an opportunity to use Talonflame, however. At least not in this deck, since it's plenty fast. However I completely underestimated how good Talonflame is late in games when your opponent hits you win N. The damage soften targets up and more or less forces your opponent to N again. Regardless, this isn't really the deck for Talonflame. It's really fun, but the use isn't really there.

Anyone got any ideas for decks that can use it more effectively?

You choose whether to use the ability when you play the Pokemon onto the bench, and the opponent gets to pick a benched Pokemon to switch in. They cannot say "no" to the ability unless they have no Pokemon on the bench to switch in.

You can also discard the items in the case of an item lock. Birch just shuffles cards and relies on a coin flip. If you get back your items and you flip for 4 cards you're fucked.
