Lillie is a mystery right now and is probably going to wind up involved heavily in the villain arc of SM. If she can't battle for herself she'll need a protector of sorts and that would be Ash.

I could see Ash and Lillie's first meeting being one where it's a rescue scenario before arriving for the festival. Ash rescues her, takes her to the professor and from there on she watches Ash on the way to the festival seeing how his relationship with Pokemon is handled.

It intrigues her so she decides to follow him on his journey through Alola to witness his bond with his Pokemon.

This will play in the final scene of XY&Z. At first it will show a sad Serena moping and crying over Ash leaving, then Ash will show up in the distance and Serena will rush to hug him. From what we've seen, their weapon makes nature speed-grow and then speed-die again. It completely killed all the nature on that test island some episodes back, and we saw in that recent scan Lysandre basically turned all of Lumiose into a wasteland with it.
