BW2 feels like the only game where they actually thought about the selection of pokemon from the beginning of the game till the end. XY kind of did this, but they fucked it up with the horrible level scaling and pacing of the game.

If you can't beat HGSS Falkner with a Chikorita and whatever your other Mon is, just quit. Not being edgy here, I genuinely mean it, the series might not be for you. This is coming from someone who had an underlevelled team in XY by the league, WITH EXP on. Never had an issue with the campaign though, and using gift mon from NPCs has always been super easy mode. You could try Sunny Day/Solarbeam, it's decent on a Fire type in-game. You can also try some physical moves like Rock Slide, its attack stat isn't that bad. I don't recall what TMs you get before the E4 though.
