This wouldn't be so bad, because several third party groups quickly developed sites or apps that would serve as replacements for tracking Pokemon, essentially crowd-sourced google map layovers where people can report Pokemon when and where they run into them.

Niantic made the decision to issue all of these third parties with Cease-and-Desist orders, which removes all ability to actually hunt Pokemon in their Pokemon hunting game. As of today the only way to play the game is to walk around blindly and hope to get lucky.

There are plenty of no name companies that end up with a much bigger license than they know what to do with just because they pitched the right thing to the right people. To be honest, a game should be pretty much finished on release. The server issues I can understand, since they probably didn't anticipate the game getting *this* big, but there are tons of other things. The gym system being awful and kind of unfair to people who aren't spoofing and botting to level 30 as well as the fact that gym battles are often 6v1, rural areas getting literally no pokemon spawns, timers for items not stopping when the app closes due to server issues, etc.

The game itself is not particularly good - the motivation to get physical exercise and social aspects are why I play. Collecting Pokémon is fun, and leveling up is fun, but I've never felt like I had to accelerate things in the slightest. If I bought a few lures I might've caught a few extra Rattatas and Pidgeys, and if I'd bought any lucky eggs I might've been a few levels higher. But so what? How do any of these things improve your life?

Go is a very typical smartphone game that got so big almost entirely because it has the name "Pokémon" plastered over it. Mainline Pokémon games have fairly complex battle mechanics (although the official meta is overcentralized towards a very small number of Pokémon), a good amount of extra features (Amie, secret bases, battle facilities (hurr frontier), etc) and they look nice. They have their flaws but to say they're inferior to a pedometer app is just wrong.
