Whenever I went to the beach I'd always play and pick up the horseshoe crabs. So when I got red version and found out I could have a badass one I found one of my favorite mons.

Probably Zubat because it's my fave...

But, from a practicality standpoint - and as an art-maker - I'd maybe go with Elekid, Zorua or Ditto. Actually, definitely Ditto. All about that utility.

Absol would be a pretty great starter Pokemon. It starts off strong so it can protect you better, it's floofy and good for cuddling, it can warn you of danger when traveling the world, and it has a very good Mega evolution for when you've strengthened your bond with it to the utmost.
