I am in the minority of liking it.

I was not advocating for it, but when it came out when it did. I saw why GameFreak decided to implement it. I feel like it was a callback to Pokemon Stadium where you saw your opponent's team and then you and your opponent hand picked 3 Pokemon out of your 6 to battle with.

This system would make official vgc battles emulate those classic battles and I have an extreme bias to anything Stadium related. It also probably made matches go by faster by the mentality of knowing your opponent's team.

It was always how they intended their competitive battles to be played, gen 1-2 had it with Stadiums, gen 3 had XD, gen 4 had PBR. Gen 5 was just the first time they cared about having proper battles on the handhelds.

Ingame, no. In terms of hyper optimized tournament level balance... more of a lateral move than outright error. Some things suffer and some things benefit.

Team preview is only any good for matches where both players have six pokemon, but can only bring three into the battle. (i.e. Pokemon Stadium)

A full 6 on 6 should not have a preview.
