I know right.

Most of the Pokémon have unknown genders
>>
>>27432711
I'm not annoyed by this, but kind of perplexed. That goes for anyone who defaults to referring anything as he or she that isn't explicitly so. "They" is a perfectly good gender-neutral pronoun.

"it" sounds like they are an object and not a creature.

But I guess it is just up to personal preference
>>
>>27432883
>>27432975
"It" works too, but it lacks any kind of personalisation. As another anon said, it sounds more like you're referring to an object rather than an individual. You'd never refer to a person as "it", but rather "they" in an event where you weren't sure which gendered pronoun to apply to them. I think you could use it at a push if you were referring to a Pokemon or a type of Pokemon as a general concept (eg: "I like Garchomp. It's really powerful) but if you're referring to a example of a species then "they" is more appropriate.

I use "he" to refer to anything that doesn't have a specific gender or is specifically male and "she" for anything specifically female. "it" feels like a negative word so I try to avoid saying it if I can.
>>

>>
To be fair, people using "he" might come from a language where "it" or an equivalent doesn't ewist. I know it happens sometimes for me, despute my best effort.
>>
>>27433113
Yeah but why do you use "he" if it doesn't have a stated gender? Why would you not just use "she" or "he" interchangeably? Thats kinda the point we are trying to make is just not to use either since they are already gendered pronouns and just make it something that is actually neutral like "they" or "it"
>>
They are actually "it"

Learn their pronounz
>>
>>27433151
Because that's how the English language works anon. "He" can be used both as a neutral pronoun and a specific male pronoun. "They" is a plural pronoun, not a singular one.

However, when talking about pokemon you use "It".

But this is just wrong. "He" has never been a default pronoun, but "they" has always been a neutral pronoun that can be used as both a singular and plural one, even if the latter is more common.
>>
>>27433501
>But this is just wrong.
It isn't. The only reason people have been pushing for "they" is a political one.
>>
>>27433478
"He" is not a neutral pronoun, and neither is "she". "They" and "it" are.

The only way "he" and "she" could be used in a neutral context is if those in question consider themselves neutral but choose to use the pronouns anyway, and with pokemon we will never get that confirmation so the best course of action is using "they" or "it"
>>
I use "He" to refer to anything that doesn't have an explicit gender, or "She" if it's a vehicle/mecha of some sort.
>>
this drives me nuts
>>
>>27433575
"They" is plural anon. "He" is what we use when we don't know/don't care about the sex of the person.
>>
>>27433645
"they" can also be singular

"go ask that person what they said"
"they said thing"

Both using he and she is cancer. "It" is the only correct way to refer to a pokemon.
>>
>>27433698
No it can't. That's a recent meme.

>"go ask that person what he said"
Ftfy
>>
>>27433055
Animals are normally “it“
Objects are almost always “it“
Pokemon are always animals or objects i.e. It.
>>
>>27433608
The latter is now considered grammatically incorrect, modern English has no grammatical genders for inanimate objects, but they used to. In other languages like German, French and Spanish they still have gendered nouns for objects. In English people only attach pronouns to objects when they have significant attachment to them.
>>
>>27433751
what i wrote is assuming you don't know their gender
it's neutral and can be singular or plural
"go ask those people what they said"
"go ask that person what they said"
those are both correct
>>
>>27433055
>>27432975

When referring to a creature or animal, even if you're aware of its sex, the literary correct pronoun is "it". By referring to an animal with a gender pronoun you are personifying it and that's degenerate.
>>
>>27433829
No they aren't both correct. They isnt a singular pronoun.

alright so what you mean to say is that if i say "awww i love your dog, he's so cute" then i'm a degenerate?
>>
>>27434155

Yes. The correct way is "...it's so cute." It's an animal, not a person. It has a biological sex, but not a gender.
>>
>>27432883
Usage of singular they has been around since Shakespeare's time though. People use it all the time to refer to a singular person whose gender isn't known.

How about I quote Wikipedia? Since you're so fond to it.

Strunk & White, the authors of The Elements of Style find use of they with a singular antecedent unacceptable:

"They. Not to be used when the antecedent is a distributive expression, such as each, each one. everybody, every one, many a man. Use the singular pronoun. ... A similar fault is the use of the plural pronoun with the antecedent anybody, anyone, somebody, someone [. . . ] The use of he as pronoun for nouns embracing both genders is a simple, practical convention rooted in the beginnings of the English language. "
Their assessment, in 1979, was

"He has lost all suggestion of maleness in these circumstances. ... It has no pejorative connotation; it is never incorrect."[104]

Using they as a singular is a modern meme.

>Benjamin Franklin: But my giving this account of it here is to show something of the interest I had, everyone of these exerting themselves in recommending business to us.

I'd say "it" is better considering that they are animals

The fact is that modern English uses "he" as a non gender specific pronoun. And in formal writing that's how it should be used.

Unless a species is exclusive to a gender, regardless of your preference or what you have/use/used in game(s), every pokémon should be referred to as 'it' in regards to gender.
>>
If it looks like a male, I say "he", if it looks female I say "she". As simple as that; no Tumblr shit.

Fennekin will always be a "she" to me. So is Celebi. So is Shaymin.
Machamp will always be "he". Female Machamp was a mistake.

I specifically aim for female Alakazam and male Machamp
>>
"It" should be the only pronoun for all Pokémon. In-games, Pokémon are rarely, if ever, referred to as a "he" or a "she". They're practically always "it".

Most of the people who insist to call them "he" or "she" are furfags or thread derailers. There's no fucking reason to call "he" or "she" something that isn't supposed to be fully human. Most Pokémon have animal-tier intelligence. At best they could have a better intelligence than a chimpanzee. Those who are intelligent enough to talk *may* be called something like that, however, but that's not something that happens in the games as often as in, say, the anime.

But otherwise, this pronoun debate mostly concerns those faggots who feel the need to call their Gardevoir or Lopunny a "she", even if they have 50% of probabilities of being male.
