Starfish ARE protean, they reform themselves constantly. Certainly moreso than frogs. There is even a term for companies that do this, either "protean organizations" or "starfish organizations."
How does No Guard make sense on Pidgeot? There's nothing thematic about it. At least it makes sense for Magmortar to focus on aiming its cannons.
Turtles are born in sand and even eat sand as roughage. Imagine its shell developing sand geysers like Hippowdon.
Archeops gets away with losing Defeatist when it can't hold an item, and loses boosted Acrobatics.

Stunfisk's strongest niche is a status spreader, and it would let it ignore the multitude of abilities immune to earth power, discharge and scald. And it's absolutely unconventional (which is even the Japanese name of the ability).
