Something really bothers me about Butterfree's model I just can't put my finger on it. Maybe the weird curvature of it's wings or the frigid animation. It would look much better as pic below, where it didn't look like a robot butterfly and actually looked like an incest that's fluttering about.

You're just an autist.

the model is based more on the anime artwork/design of butterfree where the head is smaller. I think that's the main reason it looks off.

I can, if you compare it with official artwork (or many of the sprites) it's clear that the body should be slightly smaller than the head and the eyes are too close in the 3D model.
Many 3D models suffer from these minor errors on their proportions, but be careful saying that because some guys throw a fit if you point them out.

It's not that simple, friendo.

In all honesty, I don't think the anime should be used as a reference for "correct proportions".
Just my opinion though.

Nothing that changes the fact that the proportions on the model are different than the artwork.

Say that to those who defend the washed out colors saying they're closer to the promotional artwork this way.
All I'm saying is that the models brought little errors that weren't in the sprites (although they fixed some others), and that details are still an important aspect of 3D modeling.
