If I wanted to start playing the older ones on DS or Gameboy, where should I start?

There are usually flow charts circulating around. "Start here if you are stupid" something like that.

That only describes Diamond and Pearl
The DS era are the best era of game Platinum, Heart Gold/Soul Silver, Black White, and BW2 are all great games and the best in the series
